An inline desiccant air dryer sits in a compressed air line and uses beads that adsorb water vapor, so less moisture reaches spray guns, airbrushes and air tools. Most use beads that change color from blue to pink when they are used up. Size and flow matter: thread size, stated flow and maximum pressure vary a lot.

The six units below range from a small 1/4 inch unit for a spray gun to a 1 inch four-stage set. Specs come from each listing page. We have not used these dryers ourselves. Removal percentages and flow figures are the makers’ own, and installation should follow the maker’s manual.

The 6 Best Inline Air Dryers for Compressor Systems

1. LE LEMATEC 3/8 In Inline Desiccant Dryer

A 3/8 inch NPT dryer with replaceable desiccant that the maker says turns from blue to pink when the beads are used up. Stated working pressure is 1 to 150 psi at 22 CFM. It weighs 6.3 ounces and measures 1.57 by 1.57 by 3.94 inches. The listing names spray guns, airbrushes and plasma cutters as uses.

Suits: a mid-size air line. Strengths: replaceable beads and a color indicator. Weaknesses: a small body. Skip it if you need a larger bowl.

2. PneumaticPlus DFD-10 Desiccant Dryer 2-Pack

A pack of two aluminum 1/4 inch NPT dryers with a female inlet and a male outlet, built to attach directly to a spray gun or its mini regulator. The bullets list 15 SCFM and a 125 psi maximum, while the overview lists a capacity of 15 cubic feet, so the flow figure is the better guide.

Suits: spray gun use. Strengths: two units in a pack. Weaknesses: a small 1/4 inch size. Skip it if you need a shop-line dryer.

3. Milton 1170-2 1/2 In Desiccant Air Dryer

A blue freestanding unit with 1/2 inch NPT ports, a 250 psi maximum and a two-quart capacity, with two one-quart desiccant charges included and made in the USA per the listing. Its title mentions a filter-regulator-lubricator, but the details describe a desiccant dryer only. Milton describes a way to dry the beads for reuse, so follow its instructions.

Suits: a shop air line. Strengths: a high pressure limit and a large charge. Weaknesses: a title that suggests extra parts. Skip it if you need a regulator in the same unit.

4. PneumaticPlus SDD450-N06F 3/4 In Dryer

A 3/4 inch NPT in-line dryer with a metal bowl, a large sight glass and one quart of blue indicating silica gel beads. It weighs 6.05 pounds. The listing gives only 5 to 15 SCFM, which looks low for a 3/4 inch port, so check the product page before relying on it.

Suits: a larger line with a visible bead level. Strengths: a metal bowl and sight glass. Weaknesses: a flow figure that seems low. Skip it if you need a published pressure limit.

5. Titan 19295 Inline Desiccant Filter

A 1/4 inch inline filter with a stated working pressure of 5 to 125 psi and a 125 psi maximum, weighing 5.7 ounces. Its beads change from blue to pink when replacement is due. Titan describes it for spray finishing and other dry air jobs.

Suits: small spray finishing setups. Strengths: a light body and a color indicator. Weaknesses: a thin listing. Skip it if you need high flow.

6. THB 4-Stage 1 In Filter Dryer Combination

A four-stage set with 1 inch NPT ports and a 175 psi maximum: a particulate filter with a 5 micron element and an auto drain, a coalescing filter with a 0.01 micron element, then two desiccant dryers. The maker claims 95 percent removal from the first stage and 99.98 percent from the second. It has 11 ounce metal bowls with sight glasses and includes eight bags of beads.

Suits: a main line that needs several stages. Strengths: four stages and an auto drain. Weaknesses: a large, heavy assembly. Skip it if you only need a single small dryer.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Choosing a 1/4 inch unit for a high-flow line.
  • Ignoring the maximum pressure on the listing.
  • Leaving used-up beads in place.
  • Trusting a flow figure that looks low or conflicts with the title.
