A jointer flattens one face or squares one edge of a board so it can be planed or glued up straight. Benchtop jointers shrink that job to a unit you can lift onto a bench, usually with a 6 inch cutting width and a table around two feet long. Cutterhead type, motor and fence tilt are the main differences.

The six machines below include five 6 inch jointers and one 10 inch planer and jointer combo. Specs come from each listing page, and motor figures are the makers’ own. We have not used these machines ourselves. Follow each maker’s manual for setup and use.

The 6 Best Benchtop Jointers

1. VEVOR 6-Inch Benchtop Jointer M1B-LS-1558

A 6 inch jointer with a 2 HP motor at 12,000 RPM, a two-blade straight cutterhead with HSS blades, a 6 by 23 inch cast aluminum table, up to 1/8 inch cutting depth and an adjustable fence. The listing gives 21.2 pounds and 22.83 by 12.99 by 11.81 inches. The 2 HP figure is the maker’s and is not shown for the 15 A units below, so the motors are not directly comparable.

Suits: a light straight-knife jointer. Strengths: a cast aluminum table and a stated depth. Weaknesses: the motor claim is hard to compare. Skip it if you want a spiral head.

A 15 amp jointer at 12,000 RPM with a 6 inch cutting width, up to 1/8 inch depth, HSS blades and a fence that tilts from 90 to 135 degrees. 6. Hoteche 10-Inch Planer and Jointer Combo

A 13 amp combination machine with a 10 inch cutting width, 9,000 RPM no-load speed and a stand. The listing gives a jointer depth of 0 to 3 mm and a planer depth of 0 to 2 mm, and also mentions cutting depths of 5 to 120 mm, which likely refers to board thickness, so confirm with the maker.

Suits: one machine for both jobs. Strengths: a 10 inch width and a stand. Weaknesses: unclear depth wording. Skip it if you want a dedicated jointer.

Benchtop Jointer FAQ

Straight knives or a spiral head?

Only the VIGO lists a spiral head with carbide inserts. The others list straight knives or do not say.

Can a jointer replace a planer?

They do different jobs. A jointer flattens a face or edge, while a planer sets thickness. The Hoteche combo covers both in one machine.

The Short Version

For a light straight-knife unit, the VEVOR. For variable speed, the CRAFTSMAN. For a setting gauge in the box, the WOODERS. For a tilting fence, the WOODSTARTER. For a spiral head, the VIGO. For one machine doing both jobs, the Hoteche.
