How to Choose Poly Mailers: Size, Thickness and Seal Types

Poly mailers are lightweight plastic envelopes for soft goods that do not need a rigid box. To choose well, compare four things: size, film thickness, seal style and how opaque the film is. A short checklist makes the decision quick.

Checklist Before You Order

1. Size

Fold or roll your item the way you will actually pack it. Measure the folded width and length, then add a little room so the item slides in without force. A mailer that is too snug can strain the seal, while one that is far too large leaves a floppy tail.

2. Film thickness

Thicker film generally resists snags and punctures better, while thinner film is lighter and more flexible. Makers describe thickness in different units, so check the maker’s guide and compare like with like.

3. Seal style

Most mailers close with a strip of adhesive under a peel-off liner. Look at how wide the strip is and whether the flap has a second tear strip for easy opening on the receiving end. Press the seal firmly once and check that it holds.

4. Opacity

An opaque or lined film hides what is inside. A clear film lets you see the item, which can help you find a mix-up but gives no privacy.

What Poly Mailers Suit and What They Do Not

  • Suited to: folded clothing, soft textiles, flat soft goods, items that do not mind squeezing.
  • Not suited to: breakable goods, items with sharp corners, anything that needs to keep a rigid shape.
  • Use caution with: moisture-sensitive goods. Plastic film resists splashes but does not block every kind of wet. Add an inner wrap if needed.

How to Seal and Label One

  1. Smooth out the item inside and press out extra air toward the opening.
  2. Peel the liner and fold the flap over in one motion.
  3. Press along the whole strip with your palm.
  4. Stick the label on a flat area, away from the seal and any folds.
  5. Check that the barcode lies flat with no wrinkles.

When you are comparing options, order a small bundle of two sizes first. Pack your usual items, close them and look at how the film behaves at the corners and along the seal. A short trial tells you more than a spec sheet, and it keeps you from storing a large stack of the wrong size.

FAQ

Can I reuse a poly mailer?

Some can be reused if the seal still works and the film has no holes. Cover or remove any old labels and barcodes first.

Are there size limits I should know about?

Carriers set their own limits for envelope and parcel types. Check the carrier’s current instructions for the exact rules.

The Short Version

Match the mailer to the folded item, choose a thickness that suits the contents, test the seal, and decide how much privacy you want from the film. Keep poly mailers for soft goods and use boxes for anything fragile or rigid.
