How to Replace Weatherstripping on a Door to Close Drafty Gaps

To replace door weatherstripping, remove the old seal, clean the frame, measure each side, and press or screw a new strip in place. A good fit lets the door close with light pressure on the seal. The work is simple and needs few tools.

Spot a Worn Seal

Close the door in daylight and look for light around the edges. On a cold or windy day, hold your hand near the gaps to feel moving air. Old strips may be flat, cracked, torn or missing in places.

Materials

  • New weatherstripping of the same style as the old one
  • Measuring tape
  • Utility knife or scissors
  • Putty knife or scraper
  • Cleaning cloth and mild cleaner
  • Small hammer or screwdriver, depending on the fastener type

Type Matters

Style How it fixes Where used
Adhesive foam Peel-and-stick Light-duty door frames
Kerf-in strip Pushes into a groove Many modern frames
Tubular or bulb Nailed or screwed Older frames
Door bottom sweep Screws to the door Threshold gaps

Replacement Procedure

  1. Pull the old seal off. Scrape away leftover adhesive or nails.
  2. Wash the frame and let it dry well.
  3. Measure the top and both sides of the frame.
  4. Cut the new strip slightly long, then trim if needed.
  5. Fit the top first, working from one corner to the other.
  6. Fit each side, pressing the strip in so it meets the top strip without gaps.
  7. Close the door slowly and check how it meets the seal.
  8. If the door is hard to latch, ease the strip back a little or choose a thinner style.

Door Bottom

A sweep along the bottom edge may need to be trimmed to the door width. Mark it, cut it with a suitable blade, and screw it on, keeping it level. Make sure the door can still open over the floor covering.

Choose a dry, mild day for adhesive types, as the label may list a temperature range. Press along the strip firmly after fitting. Over the following weeks, look for places where it has lifted, and press it down again. Dispose of the old material as local rules direct.

Keep leftover strips in a labeled bag. A short length can be handy when a corner wears out sooner than the rest of the frame, and you will know which style you used.

FAQ

Does new weatherstripping fix a warped door?

Not fully. If the door does not meet the frame evenly, you may need to adjust hinges or ask a qualified professional.

Is any ventilation needed?

Some rooms with fuel-burning appliances need air supply. Check local rules and ask a qualified professional about gas appliances before sealing a room more tightly.

The Short Version

Remove the old seal, clean the frame, measure, and fit new strips top first. Check the door still latches comfortably. Follow the maker’s instructions for the style you choose.
