How to Back Up a Phone: Three Ways to Protect Your Files

You can back up a phone in three common ways: through the maker’s online backup option, by copying files to a computer, or by using an external drive. Using two of these together gives better coverage than relying on one. Each method has trade-offs, outlined below.

Method One: The Maker’s Online Backup

Most phone makers include a backup feature in settings. It can copy photos, contacts, messages and app data to an online account.

  1. Connect the phone to a steady Wi-Fi network and to power.
  2. Open the settings page and look for the backup section.
  3. Follow the maker’s on-screen instructions for signing in; do not share your sign-in details with anyone.
  4. Choose what to include, such as photos, contacts and app data.
  5. Switch the backup on and run the first one, which may take a while.
  6. Check the page afterwards for a recent completion time.

Method Two: Copy to a Computer

This route is useful for photos and videos. Plug the phone into the computer with its cable, unlock the phone, and allow file access if it asks. Then drag the picture and video folders into a folder on the computer. Check the maker’s guide if the computer does not recognise the phone.

Method Three: External Drive

Some phones can send files straight to a drive through a suitable adapter or cable. Check the maker’s guidance on supported drives and formats, then copy the folders you want to keep.

Comparing the Options

Method Good for Watch out for
Online backup Automatic, ongoing copies Limited free room with some accounts
Computer copy Large photo and video sets Needs you to remember to do it
External drive Offline, portable copy Easy to misplace or damage

Check the Copy

  • Open a few photos from the backup location.
  • Look at the date of the newest item.
  • Repeat the check every few months.

Making it a habit. The best backup is the one that actually runs. Set a reminder on a calendar for the manual methods, such as the first Sunday of the month. For the online method, check once in a while that it is still switched on, since a system update or a full account can quietly pause it.

Keep the external drive away from the phone bag and somewhere dry. If the photos matter to you, aim for at least two copies in two different places, so that one loss does not wipe out everything.

FAQ

How often should I back up?

Automatic backups can run daily. For manual copies, choose a routine you will actually keep, such as monthly.

Does a backup include everything?

Not always. Some app data and downloads are left out, so read the maker’s description of what is included.

The Short Version

Use the maker’s online backup for ongoing protection and a computer or drive for a second copy of your photos. Check that backups open, and repeat the check regularly.
