A chalk line is a reel of string stored in a chalk-filled case. You pull the string out, pull it tight, snap it and it leaves a straight line on the surface. The main choices are the line length, how thick the line is, the gear ratio for rewinding and what the case is made of.
The six reels below run from 100 foot plastic and aluminum cases to two 150 foot reels. Lengths, gear ratios and materials come from each listing page and are the makers’ own claims. We have not used these reels ourselves. Where a listing is missing a figure or disagrees with itself, we say so.

What to Look For
| Feature | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Line length | Longer lines mark longer runs without moving |
| Line thickness | Thicker line gives a bolder mark; thinner gives a finer one |
| Gear ratio | A higher ratio rewinds the line faster |
| Case and refill | A metal case takes knocks; a wide fill port makes refilling cleaner |

The 6 Best Chalk Lines
1. IRWIN STRAIT-LINE Classic Reel, 100 ft
A 100 foot reel with an abrasion-resistant poly line that the maker says gives five to six strikes per pull. The housing is aluminum, the hook has a nested dock and the refill door is wide. The gear ratio is 1:1, so rewinding is a direct turn with no gearing. The center line can be used as a plumb bob.
Suits: general layout. Strengths: a metal housing and an easy refill. Weaknesses: a 1:1 ratio is slowest to rewind. Skip it if you want a geared rewind.

2. KLEIN TOOLS CHLK150 Heavy-Duty Chalk Reel, 150 ft
A 150 foot braided line with a 4:1 gear ratio, a window to check the chalk level and a rubber stopper for refilling. The nested ring stays flush against the reel to reduce tangles. The listing says chalk is not included.
Suits: large layouts. Strengths: a long line and a chalk window. Weaknesses: you buy the chalk separately. Skip it if you only mark short runs.

3. Tajima ChalkRite II Extra Bold
A reel with a 1.0 mm braided nylon line described as extra bold, a five gear fast wind system and a die-cast aluminum body with an elastomer gasket. The refill neck is large. The maker says it works best with Tajima micro chalk and snap line dye. The part of the listing we read did not give a line length.
Suits: fine, clear marks. Strengths: a metal case and a fast wind. Weaknesses: no length in the details we read. Skip it if you need to confirm the length first.

4. Keson P100 Octoganal Chalk Line Reel, 100 ft
An eight sided case, which the maker says suits corner work, with 100 feet of 1.5 mm bold cord, a heavy-duty steel crank and a self-sealing grommet for spill-free refills. The title gives a capacity of 2 to 4 ounces, while a bullet says it holds 3 ounces, and the details table marks hand orientation as left, so check the figures before you order.
Suits: corner and edge work. Strengths: bold cord and a steel crank. Weaknesses: mixed capacity figures. Skip it if you want a geared rewind.

5. Stanley 100 ft FatMax Chalk Line Reel
A 100 foot reel in a water-resistant, high-impact ABS case with a 3:1 gear ratio, a stainless steel universal hook and a crank handle that folds for storage. It holds one 4 ounce bottle of chalk, which is not included. The details table lists a 0.9 mm line.
Suits: everyday jobs. Strengths: a folding crank. Weaknesses: plastic case and no chalk. Skip it if you want a metal case.

6. Crescent Lufkin 150 ft Construction Chalk Reel, CL150
A 150 foot reel with a 6:1 gear ratio, a fold-away rotating hub, an end hook that stores on the back and a combo hook and ring end. The maker says the line is reinforced and braided to balance chalk retention and overspray, and a one-way valve eases refills. The listing says no chalk is included, and the maker gives a limited lifetime warranty.
Suits: long runs. Strengths: a fast 6:1 rewind. Weaknesses: no chalk in the box. Skip it if you want a short, light reel.

Care and Setup
- Fill the case only to the level the maker shows.
- Keep chalk dry, because damp chalk clumps on the line.
- Pull the line taut and lift it straight up before you snap.
- Wind the line back smoothly to avoid tangles.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming chalk comes in the box when the listing says it does not.
- Buying a 150 foot reel when you only mark short runs.
- Snapping a slack line, which gives a wavy mark.
- Using the wrong chalk color for the surface.
Chalk Line FAQ
Does a higher gear ratio matter?
It matters for rewind speed. The Crescent lists 6:1 and the IRWIN lists 1:1, so one turn of the crank draws in far more line on the Crescent.
Which reels include chalk?
The KLEIN, Stanley and Crescent listings say chalk is not included. Check the IRWIN, Tajima and Keson pages for your version.
The Short Version
For a plain 100 foot metal reel, the IRWIN. For 150 feet and a chalk window, the KLEIN. For a fine, bold braided line, the Tajima. For corners, the Keson. For a folding crank, the Stanley. For a 6:1 rewind, the Crescent Lufkin.
